Displays that exploit the visual potential of appearance

Final display:

Chameleons have a very distinct look, and I plan on taking advantage of this throughout my infographic. A picture of a chameleon will play a large part. With a main purpose being to explain what a chameleon is, it is important to have a visual representation. I have made two displays, and I could see a use for each. The first being the focus of the infographic, and the second being more of a detail, or fun fact.

For emulating my base model, I found that the HummingBirds infographic has both photos and sillhouettes. I can use the photos to show what chameleons look like, and describe different facts about them. I can use the sillhouettes to create the details and other facts about chameleons around the main focal point.

First Iteration

Critique #1: Tuvshin Tulga

I like the labeling and use of dotted circles for the first display however the circle stroke could be reduced a little. One circle is half a circle which looks inconsistent. You could use a combination of two lines for more flexibility. I like the use of silhouettes for the second display but it was a little hard to tell that it was a chameleon.

Model Emulation Feedback

I think the color modeling is on point for both displays. Only thing I would recommend is using all of the colors from the color model. You are only using two in these two displays whereas the model uses at least five.

I changed the half circle back to a full circle.

Critique #2: Jackson Brown

Jackson mentioned that the photography was used well to describe what a chameleon looks like. It is important to use photography over a sillhouette in this case. He said that I should make sure to get the dotted line at the same angle to make it more appealing.

Model Emulation Feedback

Jackson thought the versions emulated the model pretty well. He was able to see where they would fit into the model.

I made the dotted lines all at the same angles.

Critique #3: Andrew Boydston

Andrew suggested that the lines, and the circles should be different. One should be dotted and one should be a normal line. I should also experiment with the width of these lines. The first version seems a little wordy, and I should try to cut down on some of the information.

I could make the second version look more like a chameleon by changing the colors of the chameleon and the tongue.

Model Emulation Feedback

The second version emulates the model better because it is flat, and not a photograph. He would like to see white used in the displays.

Revisions based on this critique

I changed the circles to be lines, and not dotted. I also changed their stroke width.

I cut down on some of the text, and widened it to make it more readible.

Second Iteration

Critique #1: Andrew Boydston

Andrew thought I needed to change the the colors of the dotted lines. He also mentioned that there is still too much text, and that there is a lumpy area on the tail that needs to be trimmed down.

Model Emulation Feedback

When I showed him my model he said that it fits all of my models well.

Revisions based on this critique

I changed the color of the dotted lines, and I increased the width of the circles. I also fixed up the tail.

Critique #2: Maria Alberts

Maria suggested that I could move my text boxes around. She said I could move the one about feet to the other foot, the eye to the top left, and the stick to the right. This will help space them out better. She also mentioned that she preferred the old dotted line method of labeling.

Revisions based on this critique

I moved some of the annotations around to create etter spacing and more readibility.

Critique #3: Kaitlin Lockheart

Kaitlin suggested that since the chameleon is so natural and organic maybe the lines should be too. I could maybe make them less structured, and they don't need to be all at the same angle. She also said the circles could be thicker.

Model Emulation Feedback

Kaitlin mentioned that I should include different types of chameleons to match my base model. s

Revisions based on this critique

From this review I let some of the lines go at different angles.
