Displays that exploit the visual potential of time

Final display:

With this display I'm trying to portray what the daily life of a chameleon is like. Throughout their day chameleons spend their time going from the sun, to the shade, and the ground, to the trees. I chose to divide the day up by the hour and show what the chameleon is doing at each time of day.

From my models I used the dotted lines found in the base model, and a created a pie graph similar to the one found in my color model.

First Iteration

Critique #1: Kaitlyn Lockheart

Kaitlyn thought she preferred the layout of the first version, and the labeling of the second. She said that the label lines in the first version created a box that created confusion. She also said that I should start from 12am instead of 1 am. If I was to use the second version she would like it to be designed like a clock, with hour labels on the inside of the graph.

Model Emulation Feedback

Example: when I showed her my models...she thought my displays did not emulate the flat design in my model...

From this review I changed the start of the display to 12 am and adjusted the rest of the times accordingly.

Critique #2: Jackson Brown

Jackson thought the first one was easier to understand at a glance. He thought without the dashed lines under and above the titles it would be clearer. Thinks I could try getting rid of all the times, and only label a few. I don’t need the = signs on the key at the bottom. I could try moving the dotted line that shows the period of the day taken up to be a dotted line box around the boxes of time. Might look good to put all the titles on top to be consistent.

From this review I changed the key to get rid of the = sign. I also adjusted the dotted lines to go around the time blocks instead of point to them from underneath.

Second Iteration

Critique #1: Johnson Goh

Likes the removal of the horizontal boxes created below hours. Thought that it was clearer this way. Should maybe start and end with 12 to go full circle. Thought the key was more readable but thought the text inside looks a little tight. Light sleeper should be left aligned with its text not centered.

From this review I added another 12 box at the end of the timeline.

Critique #2: Jessica

Likes the first key, but likes the second version for everything else. The first one is more clear and if I going to stay with the second key I should change the box to a dotted line.

From this review I decided to get rid of the key. Instead I put night and day under the corresponding section with a shillouette next to each label.

Critique #3: Shane

Thought that it was inconsistent about how the waking up time frame had a gap after it. Thought that the part about being a light sleeper was confusing because it’s different. I could move it up and disconnect it from the graph. Dawn should be in light green because it represents daytime. Border around the dusk hour on the second version has a problem. On the second version I should try rotating the graph so that daytime is on top. I could add more points to add time maybe about 4 labels. Noticed that dawn and dusk are backwards.

Model Emulation Feedback

When I showed him my models he suggested that I could use some white in my displays. Also my base model has more space between items and I could add that space to my second version.

This display found a lot of issues with my second version and reinforced my decision to go forward with my first version.

Critique #3: TJ

Most confusing thing was trying to figure out how long the hunting and sun bathing. Thought highlighting times was cleaner on the original version. Would like to see the display as a cycle.

I decided to get rid of the dashed boxes going around the time boxes. This was causing confusion and was not needed.
